In this Gallery we present specimens from a number of Spanish localities. These include some classic sites as the Almadén district for cinnabar, Zaragoza for its gypsum crystals, La Rioja for pyrite and others in page 1 while page 2 is represented by a group of specimens from the fluorite mines in Asturias as well as others from a number of small localities in Northern and Eastern Spain.

 

WSPA-12/6 - Orthoclase and albite

Montnegre Massif, Sant Celoni, Barcelona province (Catalonia, Spain)

Floater Baveno-twin orthoclase with white to colorless lustrous transparent epitactic albite on some of the faces. The twin plane can be cleraly seen at bottom of the specimen as well. There is a cluster of blocky albite crystals to about 6 mm. across and lustrous transparent quartz crystals to 1 cm. long at the bottom area. Undamaged. Loose perfect textbook crystal of orthoclase with some small biotite flakes attached. Undamaged. It comes from a well-known classic Spanish locality where a phophyritic granite hosting large phenocrysts and Carlsbad twins of orthoclase has yielded loose crystals and matrix specimens for more than a century. Loose perfect textbook crystal of orthoclase with a 2.2-cm. long Carlsbad twin attached. The main crystal presents a natural fissure but it is stable, the Carlsbad twin has minor cleaving as seen in the pictures. It comes from a well-known classic Spanish locality where a phophyritic granite hosting large phenocrysts and Carlsbad twins of orthoclase has yielded loose crystals and matrix specimens for more than a century. Clusters and single crystals of lustrous golden striated cubopyritohedral pyrite to 6 mm. in a matrix of sandstone. Just a couple of crystals with small contact areas, the main cluster is undamaged. As can be seen some crystals are lacking.

WSPA-S/N-34 - Torbernite

Valdemascaño Mine, Sobradillo, Salamanca Province (Castilla y León, Spain)

Quartzite matrix with a scattering of small green crystals of torbenite (probably dehydrated to meta-torbernite) to less than 1 mm. across. There is a fissure coated by tiny quartz crystals with a group of emerald-green torbernite crystals to 2 mm. across (difficult to picture in a good angle).

Las Cuevas Mine, Almadén, Ciudad Real Province (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain)

A metavolcanic piece of matrix infilled with red cinnabar ore. There are some vuggy areas where lustrous translucent dark red crystals of cinnabar to 3 mm. and small droplets of native mercury occur. Crystals are undamaged.
